In September of 1935, Konstantin Nikolaevich Shvedov (1886-1954) completed his Opus number 40 (unpublished), a setting for male choir of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, the central worship service of the Russian Orthodox Church. . . .
Born in Moscow, Shvedov was admitted to the Synodal School and studied with Chesnokov and Katalsky. There, he was in the boy's choir, and ultimately a professor on the School's faculty. In the years prior to the October Revolution of 1917, he published some sixteen works, including a liturgy for mixed chorus. . . .
Shvedov left Russia in 1922 and emigrated to America. Over the next thirty years he held various musical positions including that of musical director at a Russian Orthodox Church in Babylon, New York. During this time he continued his compositions, and arranged traditional Russian folk music for both mixed and male choir. . . .
Following Shvedov's death in 1954, all his compositional legacy went into the archives of the Library of Congress where it remained until, through the Shvedov heirs, it came into the hands of Slavyanka's music director, Aleksei Shipovalnokov. . . .
