We know by contemporary account that the "Goldberg" Variations were a fulfillment of a sympathetic and remunerative commission, tendered Bach by the Baltic Count Hermann Keyserlingk (Russian anbassador to Dresden) in 1741, and to be studied and performed by the Count's brilliant young protege, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg. External circumstances notwithstanding, the Goldberg Variations, like Art of Fugue and Musical Offering, represents most truly a fulfillment of an inner vision, an inner imperative, and - in Bach's last decade - a typically transcendent musical objective. If the Goldberg Variations is a virtual anthology of the types and forms of secular instrumental music of its age, it remains first and most miraculously, a fusion of these things into a single experience, most fully and movingly apprehended whole.
