As a performer, the Italian violinist Nicola Matteis was admired for his ability to work "wonders upon a note." As a person, however, Matteis was awkward and excessively proud - perhaps even arrogant and anti-social - traits that hindered his advancement in his adopted country England. He was a virtuoso violinist, composer of considerable skill and charm, guitarist, and author of an important treatise on continuo playing on the guitar.
- Scott Pauley
