The term Sprezzatura was used in this sense by Baldassare Castiglione in his manual for gracious living, Il libro del cortegiano (The Book of the Courtier, 1528), and was claimed for professional musicians by Giulio Caccini in his preface to Euridice (1600) and Le nuove musiche (1602). According to Castiglione, the noble who turns to music should "dissimulate the care and effort that is required to do anything well; and let him appear to esteem but little this accomplishment of his, yet by performing it excellently well, make others esteem it highly."
- Scott Metcalfe
