In the 16th and 17th centuries much vernacular music celebrating the festivals of winter (Christmas, St. Stephen's Day, New Year, Twelfth Night, etc.) took the form of newly-written verses set to pre-existent tunes. In England an extensive repertoire of ballad tunes frequently provided the melodies for these Yuletide verses, while in France the melodies tended to consist of fragments of liturgical music, theatre songs or folk songs.
Sometimes these texts were published in books, other times on large folio sheets known as broadsides. This latter format was used widely in English society, not only for Christmas texts but more importantly for ballads describing historical events, tales of love and romance, even political propaganda. Neither the books nor the broadsides usually contained music; rather, underneath the title of the ballad was the designation "To the tune of . . ."
